FIRST TIME!!!

OPEN STUDIO TOUR IN ELK GROVE

Local artist-sculptor, Kanika Marshall, wondered why the blossoming City of Elk Grove had not yet joined the artistic ranks of other cities by inviting art lovers to view the studios of local artists.  Yes, there is a flourishing art community in Elk Grove!  There is the thriving Elk Grove Artists (EGA) organization comprised of about 80 local artists who have monthly art-related meetings and sponsor an annual art competition for high school students, among other community-oriented activities.  There is a new Elk Grove Fine Arts Center that brings fine art and community together by offering classes in various art media and selling fine art.  There is an active Arts Council that has lobbied the City  of Elk Grove to purchase fine art for public places.  There is the annual Strauss Waltz in Elk Grove Park and an annual Fine Arts Festival (August 30th at Laguna Town Hall) that exposes the community to all the arts:  dance, writing, music, performance art, and visual art.  Yes, there is plenty of art and culture in Elk Grove.

But what about an Open Art Studio Tour in Elk Grove?

For the first time ever, on August 16th and 17th, from 10 AM to 5 PM, several Elk Grove artists will be opening their studios to art lovers.  You may not only purchase their work but also see where and how they make their art.  So if you have ever wanted to see how beaded jewelry is made, or how a watercolor or oil painting is created, or see what equipment is used to make clay sculptures, or learn about pastel drawing, or look at a photographer’s tools, or find out what iris folding is, or talk with an artist about their inspiration for art, this is the event for you!  Several artists will be holding demonstrations during the tour, and some will offer special studio prices, so be ready to have a great time.

Here is some information about the artists who will be participating in the Open Studio Show (please see the map to note where the numbered artists’ studios are located):

1) At 9137 Santorini Drive, 95758 – Art Show in the Garden:

Kanika Marshall  - Kanika is well known for her award-winning “Kanika African Sculptures” that have been featured in art fairs, galleries, and local newspapers.  She uses authentic African fabric, leather, beadwork, and shells to adorn the hand-sculpted clay and mixed media artworks.  Currently showing at the Doiron Gallery, you will also see in her studio garden tour impressive tile mosaic wall art, masks, goddesses, Spirit Dolls, wearable art jewelry, pottery, and home décor items.  Kanika will have clay for you to play with at her studio.  Hundreds of Kanika’s sculptures can be seen on her website:  www.Kanika.us.

and

Michael Fitzwater - Michael is a local fine art photographer who has won several awards for his black and white photography.  His subjects include intimate landscapes and close ups of nature and the world around us.  He is currently showing at an exhibition of Viewpoint Gallery member photographers at the Sacramento County Administration Building.  His work can also be seen at www.michaelfitzwater.com.

and

Mary Marshall - Aside from giving the gift of education to thousands of school children during her career as an educator, Mary Marshall left a tremendous and varied body of watercolor artwork in her second career as a professional artist.  From figurative, to floral, to abstract, to modern, Mary’s style was always colorful and positive, as evidenced by her many original and printed works that will be offered at the studio. www.kanika.us/1MaryMarshall.htm

2) At 9117 Santorini Drive, 95758:

Ila Lewis - Ila finds beading fascinating.  She sits down at her beading table, looks at her beads and begins putting creative combinations together.  She loves the texture, color and patterns in beads.  Each piece of jewelry she designs is unique.  She creates as she strings each bead using high quality beading wire or thread.  Many pieces are finished or embellished with sterling silver and/or Swarovski crystals.  She has taught beading classes in local bead stores and, most recently, at the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center as president and founding member.  Ila will demonstrate the art of paper folding for cards using the Iris Folding technique.

and

Sue O’Leary – Sue enjoys the art of bead weaving, wire wrapping along with making jewelry using primarily Swarovski crystals and sterling silver. She will demonstrate her techniques at the studio show.

3) At 9442 Laguna Lake Way, 95758:

Pat Deese – Pat is a past president of Elk Grove Artists and a founding member of the Elk Grove Fine Art Center.  Her twin passions are watercolor and photography. A six-week stint in Tuscany yielded hundreds of wonderful landscape photos from which she is currently creating her Italian landscape watercolor series. In addition to watercolor and photography, Pat, is expanding her horizons to include acrylic non-objective abstracts, collage, and a variety of other mediums. Please visit her website at patriciadeesefineart.com for a sampling of her work and feel free to ask her about commissioned work.

4) At 8816 Aquarius Avenue, 95624:

Kate Anderson - Kate Anderson also is a former president of Elk Grove Artists. She paints several genres in oils and is represented by galleries in Sarasota, Florida (loosely circus themed) and Chelsea, NY. (urban). She also designs and paints silk scarves, and pillows. Then for messy summer fun Kate dabbles in light cement sculptures and mache.  She will have one or more mediums in progress during the open studio show. Her website is at www.KateAndersonart.com.

5) At 8767 Superb Circle, 95624:

Shirley Mendenhall – This will be Shirley’s tenth year to have an open house. She cannot believe so much time has passed and that it has been so rewarding.  Painting remains a passion for her.  Come share art with Shirley one more time.

and

Ginger Hyman – Ginger is a jewelry artist who makes beautiful fused glass jewelry.

and

Julie Quattrin – Julie has been designing one-of-a-kind jewelry for over four years and is  currently showing in the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center. She primarily uses Swarovski crystals, semi-Precious Stones with Silver & Vermeil.  She considers her style “Glam-Fantasy...with a touch of hypnotic beauty.”  Some of her pieces can be viewed on her website:  www.fairytalesbyjulie.com

6) At 9090 Quail Cove Drive, 95624:

Sharon Zachary – Sharon has been doing sculpting and body casting with plaster and clay for the past 15 years.  She also does some unusual jewelry work with silk and polymer clay.  Her studio is at her home so look for the ART SHOW sign in front of her house.  Be prepared to see a lot of bodies hanging around the place in her working studio.  Sharon's other activity is her T-shirt and graphic design business which she operates under Sharon's Designs at www.SharonZachary.com

7) At 8266 Spengler Drive, Sacramento, 95828:
